네이버가 국내 대표적인 공개형 웹 게시판 제작프로그램인 제로보드를 품에 안았다.
NHN이 14일 인터넷 게시판 제작솔루션인 `제로보드`를 인수했다고 전격 발표한 것.
제로보드는 누구나 홈페이지 게시판을 만들 수 있는 공개(무료) 웹 게시판 프로그램으로, 지난 99년 처음 제작된 이후 현재까지 국내 홈페이지의 80% 가량을 점유하고 있는 대표적인 게시판 SW다.
이 프로그램을 개발한 제작자는 실은 현재 NHN 개발자로 몸담고 있는 고영수씨. 실명보다는 `제로`라는 아이디로 유명한 고씨는 2005년 신생 검색업체인 `첫눈`에 입사했으며, 작년에 첫눈이 NHN에 인수되면서 현재는 NHN 검색팀 소속이다.
이 때문에 여러모로 이번 네이버의 `제로보드` 인수는 흥미로울 수 밖에 없다.
이번 NHN의 제로보드 인수는 사업권 인수라기보다는 개발자인 고영수씨를 네이버 안에서 제로보드 개발 프로젝트를 전담시키고, 이와 관련해 서버를 비롯한 보유 장비와 개발인력들을 적극 지원하겠다는 것.
제로보드는 현재 4.0버전 이후로는 제대로 업데이트가 이루어지지 않은 상황. 그러나 이번에 NHN의 전폭적인 지원에 힘입어 제로보드 후속버전 개발작업이 탄력을 받게될 것으로 보인다. 우선 NHN측은 오는 6월 중 제로보드 차기버전인 제로보드 XE 버전을 개발, 배포한다는 목표다. 특히 하반기부터 제로보드를 완전 오픈소스 형태로 지원한다는 방침이다.
이번 NHN의 제로보드는 당장 이 프로그램을 기반으로 한 수익모델을 창출하려는 것보다는 제로보드에 기반한 오픈소스를 정책적으로 지원함으로써 非포털계 웹 생태계의 선순환구조를 주도하겠다는 목적을 내세우고 있다.
즉, 그동안 외부에 폐쇄적이라는 그간의 이미지를 벗고 전반적인 웹 서비스의 생산, 소비, 공유 구조에 적극 동참하고, 이를 통해 `공유`와 `개방`을 표방한 국내 웹2.0 흐름을 주도하겠다는 것. 또 이렇게 개발된 오픈소스 기술과 노하우를 흡수해 향후 보다 강력한 서비스를 내놓겠다는 포석도 깔려있다.
특히 네이버의 이번 제로보드 인수와 오픈소스 지원정책은 다음의 `티스토리닷컴(www.tistory.com)`도 적잖은 영향을 미친 것으로 보인다. 다음은 지난해 말부터 국내 대표적인 오픈소스 프로그램인 태터툴즈 개발사 `태터앤컴퍼니`와 손잡고 새로운 형태의 블로그 서비스 `티스토리닷컴(www.tistory.com)`를 운영하면서 블로거들로부터 적잖은 호평을 받아왔다.
이에 따라 각각 `제로보드`와 `태터툴즈`를 각각 기반으로 한 네이버와 다음의 오픈소스 지원정책도 볼만한 대결로 눈길을 끌고 있다.
그렇다고 포털진영의 오픈소스 대열 합류 움직임은 비단 우리나라뿐 아니다. 이미 세계적인 검색업체 구글도 전세계적으로 5~10명으로 구성된 수천개의 오픈소스팀을 운영하고 있으며, 또한 자사의 웹서비스나 운영 프로그램 제작에도 오픈소스를 적극적으로 채택하고 있다.
웹2.0 흐름을 장악하기 위한 인터넷 업계의 경쟁은 이미 자체적인 포털 서비스 경쟁력에서 벗어나 전체 웹생태계를 누가 주도해나가느냐하는 보다 근원적인 싸움으로 치닫고 있는 것이다.
